Last week I blogged about whats new in SP1 for OES2, and now Public Beta4 is available.
At this moment I’m following a TTT (Train The Trainer) N8004 at Novell in Dusseldorf so I can’t upgrade
my test server at home. But next week I will surly do so!
Not for (better) Cifs or AFP support, but now we can use SP2 for SLES10. The advantage of that is that we finally can use VMI support is Vmware ESX. And I know that there are a lot of companies out there who run OES2 virtualized in Vmware ESX!
I’m curious to see if the performance will increase, because now it can be better….
Update 2008-10-16 13:57
So during my course I was looking on coolsolutions and found this article about SP1 for OES2. And till my surprise Novell announced that Domain Services for Windows! This really cool stuff. Now you can give a Active Directory user rights on a NSS volume a visa versa, without making a DIRXML connection!
Other coolstuff are:
- A new framework for the new migration tools.
This gives us the ability to migrated a identity of a Netware server to a linux server. The example described is that you have a runningĀ Netware server called SERVER1 and that after the migration you have a running Linux server called SERVER1 - Ifolder 3.7 with a new Mac client, full support for Windows Vista x32 and x64, a new web interface, improved administration options, new server side migration tools from previous versions of iFolder and a much better way to recover a passphrase for encrypted iFolders.
Of course, all of the new features have to be tested if they work as well as described, but it sounds pretty cool!
So I have been running the beta’s of Groupwise 8 now for quite a while now. You can check my experience of that here.
And today Novell announced that 17 November 2008 will be the release date of Groupwise 8. This means that we can start upgrading in December! Not for production environment of course, but for all you nerds out there (including myself) who are running Groupwise at home.
So, This week I’m following the NTT ZCM 10 Advanced Administration Course at Novell in Dusseldorf. This course is scheduled for December of 2008.
The first day is for CNI’s, how to setup the classroom. After this we will go through the course manual and exercises.
At the end of the week I will blog here how it wend.
Update 2008-10-19
So the week has passed. We went with 19 CNI’s to the whole N8004 course. Although there were some fault in the course materiaal, overall it was nice.
Especially the diners with the other CNI’s in the evening. I met a lot of interessting people, and hope to stay in contact with those people. Especially Raymond, thanks for the conversations!
A couple of weeks ago I blogged that Novell released the exam for NCE-ES certification.
So Yesterday I took the exam. And passed!!!!!
It was a practical exam like CLP9 and 10. As a European I got 210 minutes to complete the exam, but it took me
about 40 minutes to complete.
Anybody who is interested in more information about the exam can contact me.
On Connection Magazine of September, Ken Baker writes about the main advantages of OES2 SP1.
The main advantage are:
- Better CIFS support. With OES2 (SP0) the max of CIFS connections is about 500 concurrent connections. With SP1 this is increased up till 1500 concurrent connections. This is about the same as with Netware or even better!
- With SP1 Novell adds AFP (Apple File Protocol) support to OES2. This was common for Netware servers, but not for OES Linux. So now (or when the SP is released) you can connect you MacBook AIR to you OES2 server!
The main advantages for this is, that you can use NSS permissions, quotas, long file names and other NSS managment utilities to manage your Apple or Windows (CIFS) users.
Cross platform file locking is not (yet) supported.
If you want to install AFP you can use a pattern in Yast to do so.
OES2 SP1 is planned for end this year.
